Barcelos, Medieval City
In a joint initiative of the Municipality of Barcelos with the Burgo Divertido Association, “Barcelos Cidade Medieval” (Barcelos Medieval City) has the main objective to dynamize the historical center and its main assets, as well as to promote the traditional arts and crafts and to recreate the context that would have been the basis of one of the oldest weekly markets in Portugal - The Barcelos Market.
Medieval times will be remembered with craftsmen of various arts and crafts, merchants and innkeepers from the 16th century to invade the city and celebrate King Manuel I, with medieval tournaments (Liça), archery tournaments, amusements and medieval games, courtship, demonstrations of falconry, cavalry, fire spitters and lots of music. Of note is the military camp in Largo Dr. Jose Novais, the medieval horse tournament /”Justas” and the recreation of the siege to the Castle of Faria.
