The Sea Houses were part of the traditional architecture of the region until the mid-twentieth century. Testimony of the agricultural-maritime activities which defined Lavra's identity until the beginning of the 20th century, these structures were part of large farmhouses of the area whose tenants also engaged in fishing as a seasonal activity complementary to agriculture.
"Moços do mar" (young boys of the sea) kept their boats and fishing tools here, in order to collect seaweed and catch small crabs, then used as fertilizer for the fields.
