This building was built between 1908 and 1912, according to the project of a reputable architect from Oporto, José Marques da Silva, and author of some emblematic buildings of the city of Oporto, like Estação de S. bento (S. Bento Railway Station), Teatro de S. João (S. João Theatre), the house and the gardens of Serralves, several houses in Aliados Avenue, among other national and international buildings. The Assembleia Penafidelense is inheritor of the Grémio Recreativo Penafidelense, created in 1892, as a result of the union between the Assembleia Penafidelense de Instrução e Recreio and the Club Recreativo Penafidelense. It had the purpose of offering to its members a place of companionship, leisure and culture.
