According to age-old tradition it was in St. Torcato that the Battle of S. Mamede started on 24th june de 1128, in which King D. Afonso Henriques won the leadership of the County of Portucalem and began the process of the political independence of Portugal, putting an end to attempts at Galician hegemony.
