Tomaz de Figueiredo born, in 1902, being a few months old was brought to his grandparents’ house, where he lived during his childhood and early youth. There, with his parents and uncles, he seized the concepts of goodness and beauty as well as devotion to “Dom Miguel” that he considered legitimate, concepts that he never forgot and often granted to the heroes of his novels.
In this house; he was born and raised as a writer and the life experience he spent there brought a lot of the inspiration contained in his most renowned novel “A Toca do Lobo” (A Wolf’s Lair), and awarded him the Prize “Eça de Queiroz”.
Tomaz de Figueiredo was a prose writer, poet and Drama-Related playwright, sometimes Romantic, others Satirical, renowned for mastering the art of writing which led him to be unanimously considered as a Portuguese language’s reference. He also received the novelistic National Award attributed to his “Tiros de Espingarda” (Shooting Gun), as well as the “Diário de Noticias” (Daily’s Newspaper) Prize for his novel “A Gata Borralheira” (Cat Ashpan).
Deceased at 67 years old, he now rests at the “S. Bento” cemetery, in “Arcos de Valdevez”, and his grave is marked by his mortuary mask, crafted by Master “Jorge Vieira” as well as a sonnet of his own, engraved on a granite stele.
