Fountain of Porta Nova Square

Barcelos
Description
This fountain, which stays in the Largo da Porta Nova, came from the Convent of Vilar de Frades and it was offered by the Order of the Priests Lóios to the Municipality of Barcelos. It is composed by an octagonal tank, very elegant, in the centre, from which you can see a floral shaft, which holds a large bowl, also octagonal. The nozzles of this bowl are eagles, symbol of St. John, the Evangelist and patron of the Order of Lóios. From this bowl it comes out another shaft, with acanthus leaves, over which we can see a new bowl, narrower, with floral nozzles. At the top there is a statue full of movements, maybe of St. John, the Evangelist. This Fountain has an inscription from 1732.
