Herculano de Sá Alves was born in Silvalde, Espinho, on July 22, 1948 and does handcraft in wood. He started at the age of 11 years as an employee of a carpet manufacturer and it was in this company that he wanted to learn how to work with wood, due to the carpenter who gave maintenance to the weaving machines.
He began with some caravels made of wooden fruit boxes and then, boats of Xávega art, rays, dolphins, golden, sardines and others. Later, he also began to work with tree roots and trunks, carving several sculptures, some of them awarded.
Currently, he makes from the trunks of trees, snails, cats, owls and other animals, for collectors.
