Quinta das Brôlhas

Lamego
Description / Facilities

Built in 1771, this is one of the grandest manor houses in Lamego.
Its facade is notable for its unusual decorative ornaments, carved in granite, and an imposing gateway surmounted by the magnificent family crest. The shield has five divisions, highlighting the heraldic signs of the Osórios, the Menezes (the Marquises of Marialva) quartered, the Castros sinister with thirteen roundels.
This building was listed in 1975 as being of public interest, its magnificence bearing witness to the prosperity that the aristocracy held in the Lamego region in the 18th century.
Casa das Brolhas belonged to various dignitaries linked to the most ancient nobility of Portugal, such as Macário de Castro da Fonseca e Sousa, peer of the realm, brilliant parliamentarian in the early days of the constitutional regime, a great benefactor of Lamego; as was his grandson, Macário de Castro da Fonseca e Sousa Pereira Coutinho, also a peer of the realm. Other notable ancestors included Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, who became Grand Master of the Order of Malta.
