There is no better way to relax on a vacation than to soak in a naturally heated thermal pool or to enjoy a relaxing therapeutic treatment. Portugal has 52 thermal springs of low enthalpy (20ºC – 150ºC), with the application in thermals and it is precisely in the North of Portugal where these are concentrated in greater number. Did you know that its location is closely related to the existence of major tectonic accidents and that one of the main flaws is precisely the one that runs through Penacova - Peso da Régua - Verin? This is one of the reasons why the North of Portugal has 21 thermal spas which represents about 40% of the total national supply. The destination of Porto and North of Portugal presents for this reason a great diversity of thermal units scattered throughout the region in very different landscapes that at altitude can vary around 756 meters. The thermal unit that is at the lowest elevation is situated at 12 meters of altitude. The water temperature may vary between 16°C in the Termas de Vidago and 76°C in the Caldas de Chaves. Porto and North of Portugal is indeed a destination with unique conditions to combine well-being, health, leisure and tourism. Did you know that well-being and health were the attributes that the Romans associated to the thermal practice? The Romans used expressions such as salus per aquam, which means "physical well-being through water. The thermal baths destination in Porto and North Portugal nowadays offer thermal spa with treatments in rooms of direct light in a mixed classical-contemporary architectural framework, such as the Vidago Palace and Pedras Salgadas. Well-being finds new languages and proposals today. The concept of ecotourism and Nature Park is one of them, trying to establish a connection between the thermal resource, health, well-being and nature. The modernization of some thermal spas in Porto and Northern Portugal have sought to add more services and leisure opportunities to meet their well-being and satisfaction. Accommodation, golf and gastronomy are some of these proposals. More recently, this destination has witnessed the emergence of a new stream of urban spas that use hot springs and new wellness offers. The wine spa at The Yeatman Hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, or the donkey's milk treatments at Carmo's Boutique Hotel are not to be missed. Deliver your health and well-being to the care of our waters! |
