Calvário Gardens

Fafe
Description
The most important public garden in the city takes its name after the site where a small chapel had once stood. At the time, the mayor, José Florêncio Soares, decided to build this garden with the help of the famous Brazilian from Fafe, commander Albino de Oliveira Guimarães. The formal opening of the romantic garden took place on 26 December 1892.
At the time of its construction, the public garden was typical of Portuguese society, a place frequented by the bourgeoisie for leisure and socialising, where everyone commented on the latest news, listened to music played by the bands, and watched theatre plays and fireworks.
A lake and a bandstand were built in 1912 and have both been preserved. The garden is rectangular in shape, surrounded by a fence and boasts lush cedars, linden trees and oaks.
The garden is still used for leisure, relaxing, socialising and dating, and is a favourite place for enjoying the fabulous views.
