Torre de Moncorvo
Description

In Torre de Moncorvo the name "Castle" is especially applied to the rectangular space overlooking the Plaza Francisco Meireles, defined by strong walls of stone (granite ashlar) and whose platform serves wide of the Town Hall. This designation also applies to all the old quarter or historical set.

The medieval fortification of Torre de Moncorvo determined by D. Dinis, around 1295, would initially only for about walled, in whose interior space is located the new village.

Still in the first half of the XIV century, probably was built the castle, located in the extreme south of the fence, of trapezoidal plant, with the corners trimmed by circular bastions, having inside two quadrangular building associated with a possible residence of the mayors towers.

The fence surrounding the medieval city limits had 3 or 4 doors, which left only the Arc Lady of Remedies, east and south of the trace port.

From 1988 to 2001 archaeological work took place in order to reveal some of the remains of the old castle and surrounding buildings, which are in the process of recovery and musealization.
