The “Vilela”’s Bridge

Arcos de Valdevez
Description
Construct of Public Interest since 1990, “Vilela”’s Bridge is also symbolic of the architectural manifestations of this kind existing in the municipality hoop. It ensures even today the communication between the “Vilela” and “Amorim”’ villages, with a characteristic structure of access ramps and two arches, of unequal size supporting a deck (one of them broken), and a prismatic cutwater.
The parapet is of harnessed stonework, the main pavement of irregular nature being, mounted directly on the key arches.
The bridge is of typically Romanesque construction, even though we do not known the exact date of its construction, it appears referenced as "bridge" in the Inquiries of 1258, which, one can assume dates the bridge’s existence back to the first half of the 13th century.
