The Oliva Art Center is an art exhibition and collection management center created in 2013 by the Municipality of São João da Madeira as part of the project for the conversion of one of the city's most symbolic industrial buildings, Oliva's factory and foundry. It is the only artistic institution in the country dedicated to contemporary art and brute / outsider art. With an exhibit area of about 2,500 square meters, organized into three galleries, it features an annual program of temporary exhibitions. The exhibition program regularly and continuously presents the art collections on deposit at the Center along with exhibitions by renowned national and international artists.
At the Art Center, two important private collections are deposited on loan. The Norlinda and José Lima collection - one of the largest private collections of contemporary art in Portugal and the Treger / Saint Silvestre collection - one of the most important marginal art collections such as Brute / Outsider Art and Singular Art in Europe. Together they add more than two thousand works and about five hundred artists, national and international, each being the result of more than thirty years of collecting. Both were distinguished in 2017 with the APOM Collector's Award.
It is a privileged place for the education, diffusion, discussion and appreciation of contemporary artistic expressions and that promotes accessibility, participation and development of the public. In this context, it conducts educational and artistic activities through guided visits to exhibitions, artistic and performance workshops, intellectual and critical exploration, theoretical courses for adults, in a set of actions that depart from our exhibitions and encourage the development of new perspectives and approaches to art. .
